A Personal Best!

I don't think a month has gone by when I haven't read at least one article pertaining to the needlearts in electronic or print media. This page is a gathering of what I've encountered over the past 90 days, plus something old I'm rather proud of. More links coming - and always welcome!

A Fiber Arts Bonanza in New Mexico!

The Life section of the USA Today has a great article about a state- sponsored network of rural fiber-arts trails in New Mexico. Stretching from the state’s northwestern Navajo County to Las Cruces, you can visit working fiber farms, community-based enterprises, museums, galleries, and artists’ studios. The emphasis is on weaving, spinning, and dyeing. Visitors come away with a deep appreciation of the area’s history. If you’re a knitter, you may also find that you’ve come away with an additional stash!

If you love fiber arts and the Southwest, you already know what the itinerary of you next vacation will be! For more information, visit New Mexico Fiber Arts Trails. There is a 64-page PDF that will get you started. To read the entire article, stop in the shop anytime.

Victoria Magazine Highlights

One of my favorite magazines is Victoria Magazine. This unique bimonthly publication is a terrific source for inspiration.

From their Media Kit:

In a frantic and hurried world, Victoria offers a respite from the chaos of everyday life. She is dedicated to living beautifully when entertaining, cooking, and decorating and even in her artistic pursuits. With a distinct personality all her own, Victoria personifies femininity, passion, and an enterprising spirit.

The website is well worth a visit. I have a few issues in the shop you may peruse. The magazine isn't cheap - $19.95 for six issues - but you're sure to be hooked after one issue. Something you might ask for as a special gift.

In their May/June 201o issue, there is a article on the Plimoth Jacket, entitled "Embellished with Sylke and Gold." Those of you who love emboidery and/or Elizabethan clothing styles must check out this blog! Be sure to read it all the way through. There are some stunning photos! Thank you, Julie Thompson, for helping me track down this information!

In their July/August issue, there is an article on The French Needle a Maryland-based shop that imports all sorts of needlework supplies you can't find in other American shops. She even has something called "Laine St. Pierre," a line of wool floss, something I've never heard of. If you're looking for something unusual, visit her website. Ive already got my eye on her "Londres" ("London") chart.

Vintage Clothing at the Marin History Museum!

I have received word from the Marin History Muesum that their Fall 2010 Marin Rocks Exhibition will feature a gorgeous Brocade Jacket from the 1960s on loan from a local seamstress. If you've never been to the Marin History Museum, it's at 1125 B Street in San Rafael. I'll let everyone know when the dates are announced.

A Personal Best

The following item appeared in a Winter 2007 edition of the Catholic San Francisco’s “On the Street Where You Live” column by Tom Burke.

Let’s hear it for Michelle Hufford, proprietor of San Rafael’s Come to the Point! needlepoint shop and whose work recently found its way into the Vatican. A woven wine carrier Michelle made caught the eye of fellow Marinite Heidi Kuhn who thought it perfect for a bottle of Robert Mondavi wine, specially autographed by the vintner, and set to be presented to Pope Benedict XVI in a private audience. “Thank you for the beautiful needlepoint wine holder created by your talented daughter, as it was proudly used to present the bottle of Robert Mondavi 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon-hand signed-to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, on Oct. 3, 2007, at the Vatican,” Heidi said in a note to Michelle’s folks Chuck and Sandy Hufford. I guess Michelle can now say she is needlepointer to the pope,” the proud-as-can-be Sandy told me. Heidi, by the way, is founder of Roots of Peace, an internationally known effort to “remove landmines and establish schools and soccer fields” in Afghanistan and other countries.

Both the canvas and the bag are from Raymond M. Crawford Needlepoint
