Although you will not find a large collection of books in the shop at this time, please remember that I am delighted to order any book you need. Please don’t hesitate to ask, if you don’t find what you’re looking for in the shop. I do stock the following books: New Canvaswork: Creative Techniques in Needlepoint by Jill Carter. This book is a glorious addition to the library of any stitcher who loves to push the envelope. The author, owner of Masterclass, a British school of needlework, examines techniques ranging from couching, to embroidery on canvas, to attaching mirrors and coins (the trusty Jessica is a must), to incorporating machine embroidery into your work using cable and zigzag stitches. She also offers intriguing options for painting your canvas. Now, where did I put that spray paint? For those of you who love pulled thread techniques, the book provides two chapters of useful information. Carter’s hardcover book is short (128 pages), and brimming with stunning color photos! It is a must see, and priced at a very reasonable $24.95. The Complete Needlepoint Guide: 400+ Needlepoint Stitches by Susan Sturgeon-Roberts This now out-of-print book is a must-have in your needlework library. The stitches are not divided into the usual categories, but are listed alphabetically. This terrific “dictionary” feature encourages browsing. I discovered several new stitches I can’t wait to try! Susan includes several stitches courtesy of the late Chottie Alderson, including: Ashley, Beau Ridge, Buttonhole Flowers, Dana, and Rubato. Anyone looking for directions to Chottie’s Plaid? It’s in here! The book even has a stitch contributed by comedian Arte Johnson. Susan also provides a Stitch Durability Chart that tells you how well a stitch will hold up. Making a purse, and are tired of the Basketweave? Take a look at her numerous “hard wearers.” There is also a chapter on Blocking and Finishing and another on project suggestions. The 191-page book is paperback, and usually sells for $24.95. My price: $19.95. The Needlepoint Book by Jo Ippolito Christensen. I’ve often heard this classic referred to as the needlepoint “bible.” It is a must for every library. I carry the revised edition that contains photos of canvases completed by members of Bay Area ANG chapters. The gorgeous color photos alone are worth the price! Paperback; each copy has been spiral bound, for longer wear and easier use. Cost $30. The Thread Thesaurus: Revised Edition, by Ann Caswell, Suzanne Howren, and Beth Robertson. A must for anyone who loves to play with thread. A quick browse through this book will send you scurrying to your stash. The authors suggest alternatives for threads that have been discontinued, or are unobtainable through your LNS. The book divides threads by categories. Thankfully everything is alphabetized; this book contains a wealth of information! There are several fold-out thread conversion charts in the back. A great refernce tool, and a lovely Holiday gift! Cost: $52.00. Wonderful Stitches by Diane M. Schultz. The book divides its 320 stitches into a series of nine samplers. There are also sections on borders, diaper patters (these are small block-like patterns usually worked in two or more colors), and variations of stitches discussed in other chapters. NOTE: If you love straight stitches, you must check out this book! Its gorgeous and unusual patterns make it invaluable to a stitcher who is always on the lookout for interesting background patterns. Lots of gorgeous photos in both color and black and white. Another fabulous Holiday gift! Spiral-bound. Cost: $50.00. More to come!
